Techniques for giving breaths without a barrier device

Mouth-to-mouth breathing for adults and children

  1. Open victim’s airway using head tilt-chin lift maneuver
  2. Pinch victim’s nose closed using thumb and index
  3. Inhale and seal your lips around victim’s mouth
  4. Give 1 breath over 1 second. Ensure chest rise
  5. If no chest rise, repeat head tilt-chin lift maneuver
  6. Give 1 breath over 1 second. Ensure chest rise
  7. If no chest rise, immediately resume CPR

Mouth-to-mouth-and-nose technique
  1. Open airway through head tilt-chin lift
  2. Seal your mouth over infant’s mouth and nose
  3. Give 1 breath and ensure chest rise
  4. If no chest rise, repeat head tilt-chin lift
  5. Give 1 breath and ensure chest rise
